Operator Supervisory Course - Level 2

 

This course is vehicle specific, however some vehicles have been combined in each course due to similar tasks being performed (Municipal tasks, landscaper tasks etc.). 

 

Classroom Topics

  • Supervisors review of workplace duties in accordance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act
  • Understanding the need for hand signals in the workplace
  • Instill a basic level of equipment knowledge
  • Reach a level of competency necessary to supervise equipment operators
  • Provide further confidence in supervisors with continued practice referencing different scenarios and questions

Who Should Attend
All supervisors who are required to oversee Heavy Equipment Operators

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Formulate rules/procedures for equipment operation activities
  • Ensure staff under their supervision are made aware of safe/healthy practices and they follow procedures
  • Promptly correct unsafe work practices or hazardous conditions
  • Investigate and report any accidents in their area of responsibility.

Evaluation
Theory exam (multiple choice); oral exam (by instructor)
. These courses are designed to ensure that a supervisor can adequately evaluate the competency of equipment operators (backhoe, wheel loader, grader).

These vehicle specific sessions are designed to give a basic understanding of safety, maintenance, and operation.

Group 1 

Tractor Loader Backhoe Operator Supervisor
Designed for the Operator Supervisor, this course begins with a presentation on tractor loader backhoe design and safety concepts followed by how and why a pre-shift inspection is conducted. Supervisors are taught to recognize and identify safe operating techniques as used in a variety of real situations, coupled with simple maintenance tips. Other topics include; operation, controls, specifications, lifting and rigging, spoil placement, and trench safety.  Supervisors are left with a good sense of the basic operation of the tractor loader backhoe as well as the ability to recognize and remedy any worker safety and/or production deficiencies.

Front End Loader
This course is designed for the Operator Supervisor, and begins by covering safe productivity focusing on components and control identification, safety and warning symbols, pre-start procedures, starting procedures and after starting checks on the front end loader. The course finishes focusing on operation and safety, machine shut-down, advantages and limitations, attachments, load securement, tie-down and preventative maintenance. All aspects of topics covered are taught from a Supervisor’s perspective and will leave participants with a good sense of the basic operation of the front end loader operation as well as the ability to recognize and remedy any worker safety and/or production deficiencies.

 

Group 2

Motor Grader Operator Supervisor
Designed for the Operator Supervisor, this course begins with the overall safe productivity by focusing on components, control identification, safety and warning symbols, pre-start procedures, starting procedures and after starting checks on the motor grader. The course finishes by focusing on operation, safety, machine shut-down, advantages and limitations, attachments, load securement and tie-down and preventative maintenance. In addition proper road grading techniques will be discussed such as how to reclaim your road, how to rid yourself of potholes and washboards. Getting the most of your graders, reducing material requirements will also be discussed.
Supervisors are left with a good sense of basic operation of the Motor Grader as well as the ability to recognize and remedy any worker safety and/or production deficiencies.

 

Group 3

Winter Maintenance

Designed for the Operator Supervisor, this course specifically covers winter maintenance will discuss from the Supervisor’s perspective such topics as:

  • Route Checks
  • Equipment Checks
  • Review of Winter Maintenance Policy
  • Reducing Wear
  • Equipment Operation
  • Anti-Icing and De-Icing Equipment
