Idaho Construction Worker Dies in Trench Collapse

hardhat bootsA worker at a Wendell, Idaho city construction site was killed last week when a trench he was working in collapsed onto him, killing him.

The worker, 43-year-old Jerrad Durfee, was working with a public works department crew that was installing a sewer drain line near the center of town at about 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10. He was jackhammering inside the six-foot-deep, two-foot-wide trench, when the wall of the trench caved in on him, completely burying him in dirt.

One of his co-workers immediately started digging and was able to uncover his head and shoulders, but he was ultimately unsuccessful, and emergency responders reported Durfee dead on the scene soon after they arrived.

The Gooding County sheriff’s office is investigating, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is also on the scene, investigating.
