Swiss Scaffold Builder for VANOC Violated OH&S Regulations in Accident

ScaffoldingAs WorkSafeBC sees it, Swiss-based Nussli Special Events (Canada), the builder of scaffolds and bleachers for 2010 Winter Olympics venues violated provincial workplace safety rules when a worker fell 55-feet from a scaffold/bleacher deck at the Cypress Mountain snowboard venue last month, when the deck was dislodged by a crane.

WorkSafeBC found Nussli Special Events (Canada) violated an Occupational Health and Safety Regulation requiring employers to “ensure that a fall protection system is used when work is being done at a place from which a fall of 3 metres (10 feet) or more may occur.”

WorkSafeBC investigators met with the VANOC venue manager and a Nussli project manager and interviewed two Nussli workers who gave written statements in German. They also seized a pair of polyester slings and ordered VANOC and Nussli to conduct internal investigations, as well.
